Can new babies eat out of one of these or are they better for when they get a touch older? I can do what i do for my ducklings which is use a clay pot saucer lol If this is to advanced for when they first arrive.

I tried using one of those feeders for my new silkies but it just didnt work. so I used a small saucer as well. My naked necks are doing great with the feeder though. So maybe it just depends on the chicks?

Ok thanks, i'll try them with it and if that fails resort to the clay saucer back up plan.

Give the feeder a try, mine had a similar feeder and were fine with it. Might even want to elevate it up a little to the level of their backs after they figure out where the food is. Will help with them getting bedding in it and doing there business in it.

Here are two different versions of feeders well suited for young birds that will nearly eliminate the significant waste of feed. I've found the chicks are not as bad as quail but still waste. I put the 4X2 reducer together yesterday and it eliminated the wasted feed and made the 2" PVC this morning and it worked great as well.

The "threads" will need to be filed/ground down to allow the reducer to fit. By controlling the level of the feed this will keep it low enough in the feeder that they can't flick it out. This link for further instructions.https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/271708/bobs-do-like-a-natural-hide-out

This one is simply a copy of Jim's "Best Ever Quail Feeder". https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/641729/best-ever-quail-feeder
Work's great. When they try to sling the feed sideways it stays in the feeder.

Well since we are on the feed waste issue I will share a little that I have experimented with and tell you the results. As you can see in the first picture it is my 90 A&M and some brown. Kurds that I just hatched last week and these boogers are growing fast. I started out by feeding them with the green feeder in the lower corner and all the feed was on the ground the next morning. I was a little ****** to say the least knowing about how much feed I would be losing. So I went to the store and picked up the long fold top trough type. I can honestly tell you that I have not lost one rumble of feed since using this one. This morning I thought I would try the green one again and when I got home from work, not to my surprise all the feed was in the bottom. It's a waste.

Hey guys, I just made a couple of feeder for my quails from big coca cola bottles. Just cut it in half, make some holes for their heads in the botton, turn around the top and put some feed it in. You can put a lot of feed in it and it will be a continuous feeder. I can post some pictures if needed later. :) Good luck

Want to add an update on the GQF gamebird feeder. I ordered one just to compare performance to the two I had put together earlier. The birds have emptied the feeder in the cage. There is a mound of feed under the wire. This feeder is NOT recommended based on performance compared to the two feeders previously mentioned.
