Chick feeders - No waste!

400

Hi, have tried hanging it but they still perched on it. Have come up with the above solution. Am using redundant 'mark 1' feeder to wedge on top between feeder and roof of brooder. It's pretty stable and allows no perching room.

You're welcome :) when they r just hatched the little feeders with just holes in them work best. This gets them use to the idea of sticking their heads through a hole. A bit of sawdust gets into the feeders when they scratch around but they don't mind and there is very little food wastage. The little feeders will need refilling daily depending on how many chick's you have. As they grow so quickly, after a week or two you will be able to intro the pvc pipe feeder then keep raising the height of it as needed.

the elbow will need some cutting at both ends. The bit jutting out at the bottom end helps to raise the pipe 2cm off the base inside the bucket..for a good tutorial on how to make a bucket feeder you can Google rob bob on you tube.

Why did you find you needed to cut both ends? Where they chicks not able to reach the feed?

I don't cut mine at both ends. I only cut the "cuff" off of one end. I put the end about 3/4" to 1" off the bottom of the bucket. I use a 1 1/2" opening on my first bucket, upgrade to a 2" opening and finally to a 3" opening. The first two buckets are 2 gallon, the last one is a 5 gallon.

The first pvc chick feeder I made was based on the larger out door ones in the full grown chicken coop. The smaller version pipes were 40mm wide which equates to about 1.5 inches. I didn't cut anything of either end and my chicks weren't using them. After I saw your feeder pics I made another feeder and cut down the entrance pipe a bit. I cut about 20mm (equates to about 1inch) off the bottom end but left a little bit on to hold pipe 20mm off bottom of bucket (so I didn't have to use duplo blocks to hold pipe up whilst siliconing them). The chicks were happy to stick their heads through the shorter entrance.
