So I've read on BackyardChickens that all chicks fights whether pullet or cockerel, but then I've also read that biting is a sign of a male chick. So I was wondering if it is true that they all fight, and if they do, what age do the females sort of mellow out. I have heard of people having mean hens before, but I don't think I've read about any on this site yet (we all seem to love our chickens ^_^) But can that happen?

I have one chicken that I have no idea to sex of, but I'm pretty sure it's a Ginger OEGB. Since the very beginning when you would reach your hand in the cage he would always run up and shove his little chest into you hand. He still does it until he notices its me, but now he will jump up to roost on my shoulder and peck lightly at my toes. He is just the sweetest but I also feel he might be a she... so I'm not sure ^_^ Just thought I would ask.

Unless you have the breed that is used for illegal cockfighting, no chick do not "fight." They may peck each other but unless they get stood on by another chick its fine. They are just getting the pecking order worker out at an early age.

Show us a photo of your little he/she bird and see if we can guess the gender.

Each bird will have its own personality. Some hens can be aggressive. Some can be timid. Some can be friendly.

I bought a trio of chickens that were supposed to have been raised together. However, when they arrived they all fought like roosters. The hens would flare up and jump up at each other. The rooster would do the same thing. I got rid of the rooster and kept the hens. They eventually learned how to get along-especially when I added 15 more birds. But those two hens were the hackle flaringest hens I've ever seen. I'd pick them up and they flared those neck feathers like they were going to do something, but they never did. One hen-the smallest-was a talker. She'd cackle and attempt to crow. She was not aggressive though. However she did take offense when my husband entered to coop to do repairs. She followed him around cackling and flaring. She never offered to flog him but if looks could kill, my hubby would have evaporated on the spot.

Chickens! Gotta love 'em!

I'm going to post some pics soon but I have a few more I need sexed so I'm going to wait until I have good pictures. ^_^ I really do hope it is a female with a little bit of attitude.
