Chick Grit Tragedy

I agree with @KikisGirls It is more likely that you are dealing with Cocci. Putting them outside exposes them to it in the soil. I would treat every bird you have. It doesn't hurt if they get treated and do not have it. Get some Corid, from your local farm store like Tractoe Supply. I use powder. It also comes in a liquid. You need to go get it and come back and tell us what you got because the dose will differ depending on the kind you get. Cocci kills fast. The Corid is listed for calves.

I've never had any issues with mass chick death, so I was not thinking it could be something like Coccidiosis (to my knowledge, I've never had that issue). It also happened so quickly...5 dying within 2 days of each other. Could they have been born with it? How do I treat that and should I treat the other mature birds? I am glad to know that it was not the grit.
They were not vaccinated then. You can order chicks with vaccinations, for very cheap. You can also buy DIY kits.

I don't know if they were treated at birth, but I got them when they were day old at Tractor Supply.

I have that exact bag. Should I use the 1 3/4 teaspoon per gal as suggested by Andreanar?

TSC does buy vaccinated chicks. They are at least vaccinated against Merek's disease (while still in egg). I think they had said the eggs/chicks were also vaccinated for cocidius too. [**Note - this is what the local to me TSC employees have said. Best to ask your local store for info.]

It could have been a bad batch of chicks with internal birth defects that you would not see/know about.

Could have been what I call a birth infection. Something that started at their birth or shortly after birth. Those are hard to detect until they crash with it.

It's hard to know.

Start it immediately. I used 1 3/4 tsp per gallon, and I suggest you use that too for at least a few days. You should start seeing improvement in 3 days.
