This chick hatched August 26. One week later, September 2, I notice the right eye looks black. Mom is very protective of her 4 babies. I tried getting photos to get a better look. Next day I tried picking up chick but mama attacked me. I tried a second time a day later. Mom was vicious and I was more afraid she would accidentally injure the chick as she tried to attack the hand I held her in. Next night we waited till all were in bed. Hubby snuck chick out and handed to me so he could keep mama trapped. She went berserk! She was banging around in the coop squawking like mad! I have a very quick look at chicks eye and put it back fast. I was worried the other chicks would be in danger. Rosie is a good mama, so protective! Not like Doris last year that ignored me picking up all her babies. Doris has always trusted me.
So what I saw was watery eye making the surroundings area look black. The eye still looked intact. The other eye is fine. No other chick, mama, or other flock member have any signs of anything at all. Chick is active.
Not sure what to think or how to proceed. I can’t get near her so I don’t know what I could do. Here’s photos of mama and chick taken tonight at bedtime.
Any thoughts?
