Hello,

So this morning I awoke to 4 chicks in the bator, but my 1 and only RIR (My Favorite!) has a neck problem. It can hold it's neck right, but when it gets excited its head becomes uncontrollable and is bent backwards or to the side. Hubby said he wanted to give it at least a day before culling it, because he hopes that the fact that the chick can hold it's neck right, shows that maybe it will be able to right itself. Is it a malformation or was it just in the egg weird and has a stiff neck?

Here's a video, what do you think?

Thanks

Assuming it is wry neck, some people have successfully treated this condition with vitamin E and selenium. I don't know what the dosage is, whether it works or how long it takes. You will need to research it. And that's IF it is wry neck. Could be other things that do not respond to nutritional treatment. Then you have to administer the treatment and food and water until it has recovered, as it does not appear that this chick can eat or drink on its own. If it can't and you do not hand feed it, it will die in a day or two of starvation or dehydration as its yoke sac is consumed. Personally, I would cull it. Doing so eliminates the suffering and reduces the risk of infecting other chicks if it happens to be something contagious.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do, but do it quickly.

Thanks, I think hubby may have to cull it, I feel bad, but this is extreme, it has a hard time even staying right side up, it just keeps falling over.
