Hiya everyone.
Has anyone every experienced this?
This little one pipped yesterday evening and started zipping round the egg, fantastic.
Now there’s a gaping hole in the egg but it looks like chick hasn’t actually absorbed all the blood yet and the shell has nicked a blood vessel. It only bled about 2 drops and has now dried
The membrane was starting to look really dry so I’ve popped a warm wet cloth next to him/her.
Is there any hope for this little one? He/she is still chirping away but it does now look like the beak can’t peck at anything from its current position. Thanks in advance!

Give him some time and then once he has absorbed the yoke, he'll come out. Chicks are resiliant when hatching, and it takes 24 hours. Offer no assistance for now.

In my experience, its odd for a chick to make that much of a hole an not continue to zip. Normally if they zip that much, they are ready to come out, and should not pause for more than around 10-15 minutes at a time. I would already have pulled the "cap" off the air cell end if it paused for very long. Leave its butt in the bottom half of the egg and let it push when its fully ready.

There are some blood vessels that aren't necessarily dangerous if they bleed a little, hopefully this one will be fine.

The partial zip is also a little crooked, which I've only seen on ones that end up having a leg problem (which is why they can't rotate the proper direction) so keep a good eye on it, and if it looks to be struggling or drying out, just break off the air cell end of the shell and put it back to finish on its own.

That’s really interesting to read thank you! I had another which partially zipped and then sat there for 24 hours. I eventually went in to help after seeing her foot poke out of the zipped hole. From the moment she popped out it was very obvious that her legs were utterly useless. I gave her 3 days in a sling with braced legs but she became increasingly distressed and pulsing eat unless it was forcibly put into her mouth so I pts’d her for her own sake. I’ll definitely look out for that in any future hatches. The original trouble maker this post was created for is continuing to do well though!
