So cute I think it is just that it gets a bit unstable so when it ends up on it's back it just goes to sleep. One of my favs as i had to help it out beacuse it was nearly 48hr and hadn't gotten far with hatching and went quiet. Now full of energy and very cute

Heeee! Love it! I am just learning about all this - posted on here when I saw a chick lying down to sleep because I did not know that was normal. If I'd seen a chick lying on it's back I probably would have posted again!

I don't know that it is safe for them to sleep on their backs. I thought the way their lungs worked they could drown. I lost the one I assisted out and she kept back sleeping. Anyone know for sure??

Like MMaddie's Mom I see them sunbathe that way occasionally. But then when you invert a chicken like that yourself, they seem to have some respiratory distress. I have avoided inverting them except for slaughter.

As for voluntary back sleeping, I do see mine do it in a sunny dust bath, but not for more than 15 minutes.
