Chick Math, Again!!!!!

So how do ducks fit into the equation
idunno.gif

28 chickens = 2 x 8 = 16 - 7 ducks = 9 chickens

I love chicken math

Gotta get me some more ducks

I wanted 2 chickens, so I called the hatchery and they told me the minimum was 3. So, I ordered 3 chickens. The hatchery gave me a "runt" chick for free (who is now second-in-command of the flock), so I ended up having twice s many chickens as originally planned.

I'm happy

Very unlucky number indeed. #13 turned out to be a Ring Necked Pheasant (who THINKS she is a chicken!) Since I'm down a chicken I definitely need another 2 at least...

I wish I had the space to do chicken math

You know, more than telling the hubs I want 3 chickens and then buying 7 different breeds.

This Chicken Math thing scares the CRAP out of me!

We ordered 25, one arrived dead, so I only have 24!

I keep looking at all the catalogs and THERE are SOOO many other varieties I need to have. Silver laced wyandottes, and the gold ones are pretty too. Then there are the BR that my DH likes, also the Ameracaunas are really pretty and such cool eggs. .......... We only have 7 acres. I can see this will NEVER do!

I am devastated! I really liked this place!

You had 25 chicks, one died. 25 is divisible by 5, 24 is not, to replace the one that died you need to buy 5 more. which would give you 30 that is divisible by 5. Nothing to it.

Actually if you have 7 chickens per acre then you can easily have 49...but 49 is definitely not an even number so you'll have to get 50! 50 is also divisible by 5 *smiling*

I am so guilty of Chicken Math - you all have no idea!

We have a Border Collie who is my husband's darling girl and she needed a job, so we decided to buy her a couple of ducks to herd. So we went off to the Farm store and came home with 4 Khaki Campbells ducklings. Now, these are Gracie's Herding Flock, so those are hers. I still had no ducks. So a month later, I went back to the store and bought 4 ducklings - 2 Rouens and 2 Runners. One of the Runners ended up drowning, so 4 = 3. The Runner decided to go join Gracie's flock, so now I'm down to 2. How sad is that? So I went back to the store and brought home 2 Black Swede ducklings. So now, I have 4 and Gracie has 5, so 9 = 4. Then we find out three of the ducks are drakes and that ratio won't work, so I go on Craigslist and buy 6 adult ducks (Swedes and Swede/Khaki Campbells) so now 15 = 10. Then, of course, the Black Swedish drake had a really huge crest that freaked Josh out and he was mean to our barn cat, so we sold him to a lady who lost her Black Swedish drake. So 15 = 9.

Then, things get a little batty. I saw on Craigslist a woman needed to sell her 8 ducks since she was losing her home. So I went and bought her 8 ducks, so now 15 = 17. In that flock were two lovely Blue Swedish ducks that hubby fell in love with, but one of them was killed by a Bald Eagle. Very sad. 14 = 17. But, Eureka! A guy over on the mainland has 4 Blue Swedish Ducklings - YAY! Now, one of those little darlings didn't make it - so we now have three replacement Blue Swedish ducklings, and so of course, 3 = 1 & you really can't count the two drakes, the don't lay eggs - so really, when you think about it, I only have 12 ducks + 3 ducklings, so 12 + 3 = 13.

Then, Gracie decides her duck flock were too irresponsible and were very naughty ducks who didn't like being herded, so we sold some of hers & to be fair, I sold some of mine, and we're now down to 13 ducks complete and total.

At that very same farm, Gracie fell in love with three Black Silkie chicks. Those are her 3 chicks, so they don't count against the 20 chickens hubby said I could have. My friend ended up separating from her husband, so she gave me her 17 to sell for her, and original home flock only had 9 chickens. So 9 + 17 = 9. We ended up keeping 4 of hers and selling the rest, so then 9 + 4 = 13. Now one of those I can't quite identify it's breed - might be a Dorking, might be a Hamburg, so you really cannot count that one, right? So 13 = 12.

So I have 12 chickens, 13 ducks and my dog has 3 ducklings and 3 chicks. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

So wait, 7 chickens per acre? We have 56 acres, so I can have almost 400 chickens?

Maybe guineas and quail are in my future. Or even a few ducks.

I always knew math was evil, but chicken math leaves me speechless.
