Hello, I have a 3.5 week old chick, showed signs of Coccidiosis puffed up sitting alone looked like its shoulders were up. It is in with a large group from same hatch, everyone else looks fine. Brought it into the house, it has a heat plate that it can sit under if needed. Gave it Corid in water and watched it. Gave some of the mixture by syringe at least 2 of the tiny ones. probably did more then once. If i dropped the feed from high it would act as if it was eating but didn't see it really go though any food. I have some turkey chow that is 30% protein that I have been giving to everyone to boost up the protein. This little guy got some straight along with the regular medicated chick just to keep it going. It was upset that it was alone and but there was a bucket of chirping chicks near by. Next day expecting to see a turn around I didn't. so now I put some corid into a juice glass with a small amount of water to super dose the chick. Syringed several times. Today expecting to be better laying on side and not responding to the Corid at all and the paper towel that it is on, is getting more and more covered with bloody stool spots. What do I do? Is there something I can get at feed store that is for this resistant strain. and what should I start to give? Yogurt, Gatorade, the raw yellow part of the egg mixed with some water and Gatorade... what?

If this chick is continuing to poop blood, chances are it is now suffering from necrotic enteritis, a bacterial infection of the intestines that sometimes accompanies coccidiosis.

The treatment is a sulfa antibiotic along with the Corid treatment.

azygous... I can't thank you enough for getting back to me. I googled the diagnosis you gave and it gave me three drugs that would work..(didn't have the one you mentioned). I laid out all that the drugs I have available to me and yep I had one!~ LINCOMYCIN I don't know if she will pull through I screwed around with the corid too long. It has always done the trick.. not this time.. so they say the longer you are around / the more you learn is so true. Fingers crossed she pulls through, she is very very weak and I am giving her a touch of Gatorade, I will return in a few min to try and dose some more meds if the Gatorade gives her a kick... thanks...

If you have a good relationship with your local vet, call today and ask for SMZ-TMP, sulfadimethoxine, or Albon which are sulfa antibiotics. Those will treat a resistant strain of coccidiosis. If you cannot give that, I would give the Corid undiluted 2-3 drops twice a day.

Thanks Eggcessive, the chicken vets here all have their Yacht catalogs out. The prices they charge you would not believe. A friend took a bird in for stitches from a coon attack 1500.00 took the bird back and the vet wasn't happy with one stitch the bird died... do we hear refund... nope! Another paid 850.00 for IDK what. I had a blocked crop.. the price was 850. to start. The problem here was beyond Corid, had to move to a different drug for the bacterial infection. This drug I have lists the diagnosis that Az gave of Necrotic Enteritis right on the bag. If she is strong enough to pull through we have what will save her now. Thanks for reaching out.

ok, guys thanks for sticking with me and pushing this other product,
Thanks, Dawg for sending over the link I just put an order in for the Bird Sulfa, next day air...... Yikes! but I still don't think I will get it till Monday. God willing maybe ....maybe Saturday. I hope cause I just pulled another that showing similar signs. I lost the "exhibit A" little chicky around 5 pm today. I figured I would, she was super week.
  • I am going to strip that cage down tomorrow,
  • might spray a light solution of Clorox or Lysol?
  • Replace all new wood chips the auto water has been shut down and were back to the drippers that will have the meds. Uggh the drippers here comes wet chips.. not good!
  • Maybe I will put in a temporary water system, that will keep the chips nice a dry. Good plan! and the Corid flowing along with my stuff Lincomycin hydrochloride till the other comes. Whatever the calculations are on it.. Yikes!
Ok, I hope this all goes well I have not had this issue before.
I got a bag of turkey feed (mistake, thanks Purina for using same bags for multiple products) and was supplementing the medicated chick with a touch of the turkey to give them a protein boost. I called Purina to talk about the 50lb of feed I didn't want. They said it was ok to use about 10% Do you think it was too hot for these babies and ran me into trouble I have 5 other baby bins of babies and none are having the issue, just this one cage? Ok. well thanks again all, I hope I can turn this around....... thank you all so much, you are what makes this site so wonderful.

Use ammonia mixed with water to kill cocci. Bleach or Lysol wont kill cocci. Do the same with waterers and feeders, rinse thoroughly with water.
Personally I would stop the corid because it was ineffective to begin with and lincomycin doesnt treat cocci.
You are dealing with E. Tenella and/or E.Necatrix types of cocci that cause blood in chickens feces. Sulfa drugs treat these two types of deadly cocci. The other seven types of cocci that chickens get dont cause blood in feces and corid will treat those types of cocci.
Until you get the Bird Sulfa, give your chick milk to drink. Milk coats the intestinal lining and slows the progress of the cocci. Buttermilk is better because it is a probiotic, but milk will do in a pinch. You will probably have to give it to your chick orally via eyedropper or a syringe without a needle.
There's a good chance your chick may not survive, hopefully she will pull through.
The turkey feed had nothing to do with this situation.

Dawg. Thanks, what is the ratio ammonia to water to spray down cage? How long should it sit and soak and I assume I need to rinse it out once completed. Dry in sun possibly with a fan. Cages are wood frame plywood bottom with wire sides.

Do you think they would wilfully drink the buttermilk? I'll get it. I'm going to go put whole milk in the dripper now I have it.

Most not showing signs yet...
There are an other two cages close and on same water system but this cage of chicks are at the end of the water system. The other cages look fine should I do something with them?
Good to hear about the turkey.
Thanks..got my work cut out today..
