Sorry to be graphic--I hatched a little Orpington five days ago. The first day I noticed the beginning of pasty butt, so I washed her rear and applied some oil, then kept watching her to make sure she could poop. She's not eating or drinking much, and she tends to stand in the center of the brooder and chirp her head off. Today, no poop on the butt, but her butt stinks. Is this egg yolk infection? What can I do to help? I've tried making a mash with nutridrench--any other ideas?

Can you post some photos of the chick - whole chick, vent, abdomen, poop?

What is the abdomen like - swollen, discolored, is the navel healed?
The smell - what is that like - yeasty/fermented, infection smell, urine smell?
Is she by herself? What are you using for heat?

She is not by herself; she’s inthe brooder with others and stays under the heater most of the time. I’m thinking Omphalitis. The smell is a poopy smell. Like old diaper. The abdomen is still swollen and feels very tender. I’ve been keeping her clean and prayed with vetermicin. I can’t see her vent, but it looks like there’s an oblong yellow plug at the navel area. I’ll try to get a pic. Or is that the vent?

She’s the one at the back. I have her with some 1 day old Marans so I can keep a close eye on her.

To me, that looks like poop and the vent. Can you find the vent?

I can't find the vent, so maybe it is stuck poop--but it's REALLY stuck, because I have washed her several times. Off to do it again!
Try soaking the bum for a few minutes if it's stuck. You may need to put a little oil on there to help soften and break it up so the skin doesn't tear.

After you dry her really well, put some oil around the vent to help keep poop from sticking.
Your chick may be constipated, so once you get the vent cleared watch to see if she poops.

I washed and dried her, and she's carrying on now like I've been trying to kill her. Once she calms down, I'll do the oil and give her a little dab of coconut oil to eat--if she'll take it. Right now she's mad at me. :-0

Can you now see the vent?
It's up pretty high, right under the tail.

Great pics! @Wyorp Rock ....am stealing/saving for future reference/pasting.

I'm still struggling with this chick. I cleaned her up a LOT, but I still can't clearly see a vent--and she's still not eating and chirping her head off. I've attached a pic I just took. The vent is not where I expect it to be--it seems to be up and to the left or something. I've held her under warm running water, I've used a gentle sprayer, I've scrubbed her with shampoo, I've applied coconut oil . . . sigh. I'm stuck.
