chick pecked my eye .. then

Wow, that is scarey! With as quick as chickens are at grabbing things, I wouldn't put one that close to my head.

OUCH!

Hope your eye is okay and the contact it ate passes through without causing the chick problems, either.

As others said, be careful with chickens of any size near your face. We've got two who think our shoulders are fantastic places to fly up to, and while we let them do so, we don't look directly at them when they're there. Just reach up and scratch their necks/backs like they like and go about our business, but keep head turned away at all times. My husband learned awhile ago that their beaks are like lightning. While one of them was shoulder rooster, he looked at her and was talking to her and quicker than you could blink she grabbed his TONGUE. It was hilarious (for me), and he jumped and she flew off, and I still giggle about it. Thank goodness it wasn't his eye, but it made him quite wary about it.

I hope your eye is ok!
Your story shows me that my own trials and tribulations could have been worse...
I was snooping in the coop last night, "Visiting" with my girls...and in one shot, my GLW pecked out my diamond stud earring!
The earrings were a birthday gift from my sister, now deceased, so I was quite upset, as you could imagine!

I don't know if she swallowed it, but I have the feeling she dropped it and it was stolen by my BCM, who ran off into the corner, looking like she'd won a prize.
I now have 2 options-- either just let it go and chalk it up to bad luck and an expensive lesson, or sift through a pile of shavings and chicken poo to try to find it (if it's not in one of their crops)
Amazingly, after a bit of searching, I was able to find the earring back! But the stud is apparently somewhere that requires much more effort.

It was a very, very small diamond--it isn't the monetary value, as much as the sentimental. At least I still have one...
But it's a lesson learned, and I'll be much more careful around the little beasts from now on!

Had my eye pecked AND lost a gold stud to pecking hens. I wore safety goggles for a long time after the eye episode. I have permanent damage in the eye now and I only wear cheap studs. Chickens can be hazardous, but they're worth it!

Beware flapping wings, too - like paper cuts. They can slice your eye ball in half.
