The power went out about an hour, I threw heavy blankets on it and hoped itd hold heat long enough, according to the Egg-O-Meter it got 75°F as a low. I forgot the name of the hydrometer, it was pricey. It read 10% lower than my incubator did. The Egg-O-Meter read about 10°F higher than my incubator, but halfway through the 21 days it switched and suddenly said it's 20°F too low. This is only my second hatch and I didn't know what to do so I went ahead and raised the incubator temp to read 100.5°F and Egg-O-Meter kept bouncing everywhere, I assumed I got a funky one and just finished out the hatch. Thank you for your input, I really really need it!!I would also be wondering about the temperature during incubation. The chick looks really small for being 21 days in. The huge yolk sac also may be an indication of being too cool. I read that you had a short power outage, how long?
I would calibrate all your instruments before incubating again and do not trust your incubator instruments get independent ones, please.
Nope, not at all, there is no 'bad' here, not one of us wants to go broke engaging in this weird endeavor although there are plenty of spouses who would strongly disagreeI should've gotten a third thermometer, but I was trying not to overspend, so this is my bad.
OkayNope, not at all, there is no 'bad' here, not one of us wants to go broke engaging in this weird endeavor although there are plenty of spouses who would strongly disagree. With the thermometers just use what you have but calibrate them against a known reliable one, like a medical one if possible. Place them into 100deg. water and see how they compare.
Oh and it helps to make a note, either on the therm. itself or somewhere where you will know to look as to the difference in the thermometers, e.g. -10degs or +5degs. or whatever. Do you have any more eggs in this hatch?OkayI will get on that! I want my next hatch to be a good one
Nope, they all made it to hatching except for these 3, the one pipped a vein and bled to death while zipping last night. 6 successfully hatched and are doing great thus far. I went out to my chicken house and my Sizzle hatched 2 more Belgian Quail/silkies herself, so my one bantam I hatched won't be alone. They're the same age too so that's a blessing. (I'm in my coop trying to type and my RIR/Silkie is pecking my screen attempting to eat the lettersOh and it helps to make a note, either on the therm. itself or somewhere where you will know to look as to the difference in the thermometers, e.g. -10degs or +5degs. or whatever.
