Running out the back door young DS accidentally stepped on an approximately 6 week old chick. Some of its bowels are protruding through its vent area, the chick is still alive.

I thought for sure she would die, I have kept area moist with sterile saline, and I am going to attemp a reduction (some how). Just not sure how to go about this without causing a bowel strangulation.

Any suggestions?

I'm sure someone will be able to help. I hope you can put it back in and the chick will be fine....

I really would suggest euthanizing her as now she's had bacteria get into her intestinal cavity and will likely get peritonitis.

If you won't euthanize, flush completely with sterile saline solution, and you MUST stitch both the inside layer of muscle (the covering of the intestinal cavity and then the separate layer of skin. The interior layer must be stitched with catgut or dissolvable stitches, the external can be stitched with interrupted regular suture material. Then she'll need to be on penicillin injectable which at that size and age will be rough.

I'm not sure how you would reduce the chances of strangulation without any experience and now that the guts were out - most surgeries within are done around the intestines without taking them out of the cavity.

I'm very sorry - I still recommend quick euthanizing using the cervical dislocation method or cutting off the head.

I'm fairly new to chickens and have never had to do anything like this but I always route for the underdog, the sickly ones, the impossible cases etc. I still hoping that it can be saved somehow. Okay as I said I am not knowledgeable in this but is this similar to what happens in prolapse in hens?
