I had a chick hatch yesterday about 14 hours ago that now has a blister looking bump above where the cord was. Where the cord was looks torn but scabbed over. It was 2 days late in hatching and pipped in the middle of the egg. It has curled toes and I booted that but i'm gonna remove them so it can move it's feet better. I think the lump is more critical at this point. It hasn't pooped yet either and it's vent isn't stopped up. It is clean.

I was thinking about popping the lump but thought I should ask somebody first. I'll get a pic and add it.

When I took the tape off it's toes it kept kicking and it's elbow hit the side with the veins and made it bleed a little bit but a fluid also came out that was sticky and the same color you see, a yellow. It didn't all come out. I was afraid to do more damage.

It's been about a half hour and it is bloody looking and has that yellow thick fluid draining out. Its where the chicks elbows rub. This thing is progressing very quickly. Below is a pic of what it looks like now. The chick is chirping and easing its way in the brooder. Its lethargic but alert.

The yellow sticky fluid looks like yolk. But this wasn't there when it hatched. It is appearing now and getting bigger. I was wondering that since it has busted should I soak it's behind in warm water to help i drain and unstick it's knee from it?

I wish i could helpp....All i know is keep it away from other chicks so they dont pick it. Do you think there is still a chance it can absorb it?

When it hatched it wasn't there. It was normal looking. This has appeared over night. It hatched around 5 pm and at 2 am this bump wasnt there. This appeared between then and 6:30 am when i got up.

It was never with he other chicks. They are a week older and it would have gotten rampled.

It sounds like a hernia, but looks like unabsorbed yolk. If it's a hernia I don't think there is much chance, but if you want to wait for a bit to make sure I'd seperate it and try to cover the area so the chick doesn't do more damage to itself while moving around.

What I ended up doing was soaked it's fanny to looste what appeared to be yolk off of its legs and backside because it was just stuck. I don't understand how it could be yolk because it was coming out of the chick. It wasn't there when it hatched. But it looked just like yolk, so it must have been yolk. Anyway, when I got it cleaned up I discovered it's intetines where hanging out where the cord was. Of course I culled it right away.

That was a first for me. Never had that happen before. I tossed the other 2 eggs that where suppose to hatch and where late also. I'm not prepared to see a baby go through that again.

Thanks to those that gave advice and support.

I know they all won't make it but I try to give them the best chance I can. I had one that actually ripped the skin when it pulled the cord loose from the egg. After I stopped the bleeding it got pampered alot and the next day the rip had actually closed up and it's running around in my yard right now. Just being a happy bug chasin chicken. But this was just too much and since it was so lethargic and hadn't even pooped yet I knew in my heart it wasn't meant to be. I was hoping I could just clean it up and let it heal but that wasn't the case.
