Hey everyone! I just got some more babies (three Rhode Island Reds and three Barred Rocks). One little Barred Rock chick seems to have a goopey/crusty eye. My mother swabbed the outside of the eye with a cotton swab and saline, as well as adding an artificial tear drop. It looks a bit better but still looks a bit crusty. The inner eye lid is fine but the outer seems to not close.

I don't know old exactly these chicks are, but I'd say no more than a week old. Any suggestions would be great!

Here is a photo (link for size) after cleaning it again with saline and adding artificial tears for the second time. The yellowish part at the back of her eye is what concerns me. She's probably gonna take a visit to the vet Monday.

Update - this morning the other eye (which was fine yesterday) is now closed with goup. We have an appointment with the vet this morning.

You need to get that chick separated from the rest of your chickens since she may be carrying a respiratory disease (eye swelling and drainage is classic for respiratory disease.) Where did you get this chick? The seller may have had sick chickens and you may have brought this home to your place. Watch the others closely for the same symptoms.

We bought them at a feed supply store that orders them for resale (I can only assume they came from McMurray's Hatchery). She has been separated and all other chicks currently look fine.

Another update: The vet said it looks like a conjunctivitis so we got some eye drops for her. She's already looking better. We'll keep her separated from the other girls for a while longer just to e safe.
