Chick with Eye Worm?

My four week old chick appears to have a white worm attached to the corner of his eye. I noticed something white in the corner of his eye yesterday, and when I wiped his eye with a wet cloth a stringy white piece hung out of his eye. It never looked like it moved at all, but from reading posts online I figured it was an eye worm. I treated it with Vetrx by swabbing some on the roof of his mouth, and dabbing some on the worm and then rinsed the area with water. I tried gently pushing on the corner of his eye to push the worm out, but it doesn't do anything. I tried to gently pull it out but the chick cried and it just seems to be too firmly attached. He has been eating and drinking fine, and acting normal besides closing up his eye and rubbing at it with his foot. Any suggestions on what I should do for him? I'm hoping if I continue to treat it with VetRx that it will shrivel up and I'll be able to remove it. He is an Ayam Cemani x Easter Egger cross, and my favorite chick :/

Greetings amerzshaw,

I have never encountered eye worm myself. I know they are spread from cockroaches, so you will have to address that issue too.

My book on Chicken Health, by Gail Damerow, recommends 3 drops of Ivermectin in the eye, twice a day. But there is no detail as to how to prepare it, if that even needs to be done.

There is some information from other chicken keepers on this site regarding eye worm treatment.

I hope this is helpful.

I think I would probably try that if I could not consult with a vet.

Thank you for the advice!! We live in the south east and just had a ton of rain, so roaches are probably out. Any ideas on where I can get Ivermectin?

Tractor Supply or any feedstore. It should be in the cattle section. Note there are two types, one is injectable, the other is pour on. If I were going to use it I would use the injectable.

Here is a link to a thread with info on using Valbazen for eyeworm. I've never had to treat it, but this is the info I have saved, I use Valbazen for other worms and it works well. Go to post #9 in the thread which has a link to the literature with instructions and dosing with Valbazen.

In the event you have trouble with it, this goes direct to the literature, dosing starts at the bottom of page 1, and continues on page 2, you will have to zoom in (go full screen) to see it:
