Chick with Eye Worm?

Update: No changes from yesterday, but here's a couple of pictures from today so you can see what it normally looks like just floating in the corner of his eye :

There are a couple of avian vets in the town next to us, so I'll call them tomorrow when they're open to see if they treat chickens, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

In the meantime, he's acting normal, eating and drinking and running around. He doesn't seem too bothered by it, and only closes the eye up when he's in the sun. It doesn't look swollen or infected. Should I continue the ivermectin drops today? Use a warm washcloth and some Neosporin? I wonder if another chick scratched him and it pulled his tear duct out :sick

Greetings amerzshaw,

You can also take the chicken to see a veterinarian that specializes in exotic pets. Just look on line in your city or town. Get a few numbers and call them on Monday.

Many vets are starting to expand the animal species that they see. Chickens fall into that category, of exotics.

If you need help researching let us know, we are here for you.

God Bless :)

Yes, a warm compress and Neosporin is a good treatment plan.

In these pictures, the nictitating membrane, or third eyelid, seems to be irritated. This reminds me of cherry eye in a dog. That condition happens when the third eye lid gland is irritated and the gland prolapses. That gland produces protective tear film.

I just used home remedies to clear up a cherry eye in my dog two weeks ago. I used warm compresses, two to three times a day, and one drop of 10 ppm colloidal silver for any bacterial issues. She healed up in 3 days, but treatment continued for 5 days.

The first pictures do look like a gland in the corner of the eye is involved. So, it's my thinking that this is not a worm. Thus, the Ivermectin will have no purpose.

The chicken is eating and active, poops are OK too, hopefully. Then, he is not in a life threatening condition at the moment. So, you have time as long as he is not scratching at his eye, which could damage it. You are doing a great job with the little fellow!

God Bless :thumbsup

Should I continue the ivermectin drops today?
I'm not super familiar... but being a bovine dewormer I would think would have powerful residual. It wouldn't be my choice to continue, but there are many more experienced people already giving you advice... who aren't quite as med leery as I am.

I agree he isn't in immediate danger. Hopefully you will get some answers with a vet visit.

I used to be a big ivermectin and eprinex fan years ago, but not anymore.
