chick with no top skull

Awe. I’m sorry. You did the right thing. What a bummer. It’s only in communities such as BYC that you’ll find like-minded people who really understand how much this hurts. “Outsiders” always respond like “why are you upset about a chicken?!” But we get it. Find comfort in that. And find comfort in doing the right- and hardest- thing for the little one. It actually choked me up a bit to read what the end result was. We were really all pulling for a favorable outcome. But in the end, know that this little chick DID get the favorable outcome at the hands of a very kind and selfless human! Hugs

Don't feel too bad. Not all offspring of any species thrive.
I didn't read the whole thread but was it ever disclosed what breed this chick was?
I always feel bad if I artificially incubate and have problems because I blame myself.
The two most common causes of an exposed brain happen early after setting. They are:
high incubator temperature during days 1 to 3 and low oxygen during days 1 to 3.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and love! Ended up losing two others, I think maybe from overheating? It was rather odd... I took the heat lamp off of them and have had no other issues. I also gave them small amounts of oreganoil and this maybe also helped save the other two. Hopefully going to be integrating them soon. Just read that great article on integrating 4 week old chicks to the flock. They’re ready to be outside!!
