Chicken Advocate

Hello!
I'm Christy I am currently chicken less as they are not legal where I live. So I'm planning on starting with quail and trying to argue with the local zoning board as to why especially in today's day an age where our food production is threatened by being shut down by the virus. It's imparitive that people be allowed to raise their own food.
Besides birds I have also raised rabbits, although ended up selling them cause I couldn't bring myself to butcher them. 😝. Hoping to buy a small farmette in the future where there are less regulations. I'm also an avid hiker and love few things more then backpacking with my dogs. I pretty much love anything to do with the outdoors, althought I'm an oddity that I prefer the cold weather of winter over the heat of summer. I'm an artist and love to paint nature, my dream would've to be able to support myself strictly on what I grow and selling my artwork. Since that's not likely realistic I'm going back to school to be a Vet Tech, hoping to specialize in farm critters and/or wildlife rehabilitation.
Hello! Welcome to BYC! I hope you are successful in changing the regulations in your town changed, everyone should have the ability to depend on themselves rather than on big companies for their food! Plus chickens/ducks/quail/all other animals are therapeutic, at least they sure are for me!

Best of luck getting your town's regulations changed. Maybe this article will help:
Chicken Laws and Ordinances (And how to change them)

Thanks for joining!

Great article! Thanks for the read, I know there was an attempt to change the rules a few years ago that didn't pass, but I feel we have an additional argument now when our food supplies are being put under strain. People should be allowed to ensure they can provide some food for their families. My parents grew up with chickens in their backyards for that very reason. I can understand restricting Roosters in an Urban or even Suburban environment, but I don't see why any home with a yard shouldn't be allowed a handful of hens.

During the depression and WWII times, Families were encouraged to plant victory gardens and keep chickens. It seems like we are getting back to that level again for sure.

Exactly! I actually came across a full page ad in an old newspaper from the 40s, that encouraged the idea of every home should have a chicken. It's actually what got me thinking.
