Chicken ate earring back

Thank you for such a quick response! Unfortunately it was the actually tanzanite part of earring and not the backing. I have isolated her in a spacious unused bathroom and she is comfy. I will happily wait, gather and search each and every poooop These earrings are so special/sentimental. I don't own much jewelry. My tears have dried now and reading your message gives me hope and a bit of peace for now praying and fingers thank you

I'm not saying this to be ugly in any way.

If I had a chicken I saw (100% positive) eat something that was valuable to me...I would probably kill the bird and take it back immediately before it was destroyed.

No need to kill the bird. You can make an incision in the crop and retrieve it that way. When I lost my gold stud to a six month old Light Brahma, it required no thinking to write off the earring. I stopped wearing earrings on that day.

No offense taken, I appreciate your feedback. This hen returned after weeks alone from the mountains so after much nurturing and recovery it seems so darn sad that culling is an option. She has gobbled up almost 2 egg whites still no ring. But it's only 12 hours. I will wait till tomorrow morning and decide.

Dear Everyone - a belated reply to the gobbled up earring saga.
Sadly not a happy ending to the tale. After isolating Charlie for 3 days and with no ring appearing I took her off for an xray to make 100% certain she has it. You can see by the xray she certainly did have it. The xray could not determine if in gizzard or making its way through the system. After much debate with self I decided to heartbreakingly euthanasia her. My concern was there was a high chance of her being taken by a predator so waiting for her to pass of old age was not an option. Big tears as Charlie survived so much in her brief 12 months and for it to come to this. The vet did find my precious tanzanite earring in her gizzard with a bit of damage around where earring was lodged. Being white gold and a tanzanite it would have remained in tact. However a bird specialist said that if it was in the digestive tract/ process/colon on its way out it could have caused damage as it was big and sharp for such a small digestive system. Never easy to make the decision. Charlie is buried on the farm - I do miss my shadow/little red friend thanks again for all the advice and support. X Rita

Thank you for providing an update. You made a tough call, but I believe the right one. The vet was right, too. The earring would have caused damage to the digestive system, and Charlie would not have made it anywhere close to old age.
