Had my girls out in the yard with me today. Suddenly four of them attacked another one and I had to chase them off. Put the attackee in the chicken run but left the gate open. A couple went in and pecked around a bit then went over to her and tried to peck her again. Chased them off and left her in the run with the gate closed. She seemed to be trying to sleep. Finally put her in a dog crate by herself and put the others back in the run. She seems healthy, relaxed, and is eating and drinking. These nine chickens have been together for over two years. Recently at bedcheck I find one nestled in the corner of the coop on the floor under the roost--probably the one who got attacked today. What's going on? Is it safe to put her back in with the flock? Should I wait a couple of days?

If she's acting sick or unwell the flock will attempt to drive her off or even kill her. It's probably an instinct that helps to keep a flock healthy. I would keep her separately until you figure out what's wrong with her.

Thank you. I was thinking if she seems all right tomorrow I would try them all in the yard--they can avoid each other there if they want. So far she seems content, has eaten some food, didn't eat the broccoli I gave her but, hey, it's broccoli. As my grandson keeps telling me, "I don't eat green food." Maybe she doesn't like broccoli. Anyway, will keep an eye on her. Thanks again.
