Hello! Today we were throwing some scraps to the chickens and the dog got a piece of food. One of the hens, Rosa, got too close and my dog attacked her. She is about a year old hen of the Isa Brown breed. She is currently in a cage in a warm, quiet bathroom in the basement. She is wrapped in blankets and has access to crumble and water.
Her injuries:
She has not opened one of her eyes since the attack, so it is clearly hurt. I’m not sure if more besides that.
Her skin has been ripped off at the bottom of the side of her neck, but there is little bleeding and I can’t see any puncture wounds.
She is breathing very irregularly. She breathes in through her mouth, pause for a second, then out. As she breathes out she kinda clicks her beak? Then she pauses for about 12 seconds before breathing in.

She is somewhat alert- she will occasionally look around and every so often she will suddenly stand up and flap crazily for a few seconds, then return to her dazed state. She pecked her food once and will not drink water on her own. She has pooped several times and it seems normal at the moment. She stood up and let out one loud squawk and that’s the only sound she’s made. She is standing and balancing fine. We have not yet given her any medication or put anything on the wound. We do not have any chicken medicine and cannot go out and get any.

Please help!

Sorry about the injury. She is probably still in shock. Having the injury around her neck she could have been squeezed or shaken. There might be internal injuries, but time will tell. Can you keep her in a very quiet dim spot, separated possibly in your house overnight? Vetericyn is fine to spray on her wound.

In the morning, try to open her eye with your thumb and forefinger to look at her eye to see if it looks normal. Terramycin eye ointment or even plain Triple Antibiotic Ointment can be put into the eyetwice a day if her eye is injured. Hopefully by morning she will feel like drinking some water, and eating. A mash of chicken feed mixed with a lot of water into a mash, and some bits of scrambled egg would be good to offer. Canned cat food or tuna are also good.

It looks like you’ve done well for her, considering the circumstances. Just an encouragement to keep her hydrated! We used Bannix on a similar dog-induced injury, with good success, just something to keep her wounds clean, and keeping her calm. Hoping for the best!

Hello! Here’s today’s update:
I put antibiotic on her eye and wounds. I opened up her eye and could not see anything visibly wrong. She opened it a few times but it seems like perhaps it is sensitive to the light? I’ve been using a dropper to give her sugar water, but she will not drink on her own. I offered her mealworms, crumble, and scrambled eggs but she will not eat anything. She is alert enough to look at me and turn around, but she doesn’t seem to notice or care about the food. I am getting very worried about that. Her poop is also very runny. Her breathing has improved, and she is somewhat alert and awake. Thank you for all the help so far!

One day at a time! Water really makes a difference- we had success with scrambled eggs, but if she won’t eat, just keep getting the water in her until she is willing to feed herself. Like one of the others posted about shock, it might take awhile for her to fight for herself.
Nursing a sick chicken is fairly thankless, just know I am rooting for you!!

Thank you so much! I will keep trying :)

Update:
We put her outside in a small pen as it is nice and warm outside. She is walking around, but still will not eat or drink. She opened her injured eye, although I still can’t see what is wrong with it. She is occasionally throwing up bile, is this a cause for concern? Other than that, she is alert and moving.

Chickens normally do not throw up, unless they have a crop problem, or the crop is accidentally squeezed. She may be suffering from a crop disorder or slow crop from her injuries. Keep offering water with electrolytes, Gatorade, or Pedialyte. Early in the mirning before she has anything to drink or eat, feel of her crop to see if it is empty and flat, full, hard, doughy, or puffy. Smell her breath to see if it was sour or bad. Sour or impacted crop might be a problem, but a slowdown could also.
