Chicken belly buttons

Is it a good idea to use betadine or other antiseptic on the drying belly button tissue of new chicks to minimize the chances of infection. I have a couple this season that got infected and it was a nasty way to die.

I do believe that if you can see something you may believe is the umbilical site, it is something else. Once the yolk is absorbed, there is nothing left of the story to tell.

one of my ducks still had an 'out-y' when he hatched out. I lathered it up real good with neosporin and wrapped him in some toilet paper. By the morning it had finished absorbing the yolk and looked perfect.

thought it was dropping, turned out to be the yolk sack that didnt completely obsorb... i pulled it out washing pastybutts... shes doing fine now, but it was a very stressful evening. and i dont think she wouldve made it if not for BYC
