hey y’all, this is my 5 month old hen, Poppa (I thought she was a rooster at first lol) She was bit by my parent’s mini dachshund. She is by herself with some comfy bedding(trying to make her as comfy as possible) and it’s day 4! Her wound started as a 1” tear behind her leg and now it looks like this. Yesterday I woke up and checked on her and she was crawling with maggots, just overnight, craziest thing ive ever seen! i gave her a salt bath in a tub of warm water and kept her in there, inspecting her, until i couldn’t see anymore maggots. I was sure she probably wasn’t going to make it along side her brother that was also attacked and passed the night of. But she’s thriving this gash is giant but looks so much better than it did yesterday. I have a camera on her so I can keep any eye on her without bugging her too much, and also so I can check in while im not home. I’ve been checking her wound daily, cleaning it with poultry remedy and warm water, putting antibiotic ointment on it (non pain relief of course) and for the last two days I’ve been wrapping it to keep away anymore flystrike. Today I flushed the wound with saline to make sure all of the maggots were removed and make sure there were no more in there, and there weren’t! She’s been eating fruit, mealworms, her normal feed, oyster shells and drinking aspirin water. Im spending some time with her here and there just holding her to transfer my body heat and letting her sleep in my lap, because some nights she seems restless but she has perked up and doesn’t seem like she’s in shock anymore. She followed me outside today (still not putting any pressure on her foot) and the flock was trying to attack her! She just wanted to hop around with them and seemed so upset when they neglected her. If she remembers them why don’t they remember her? She’s grown with this flock and I’ve never had any fights. Does anybody have anymore advice for me and my girl? Is there something more I can do to make her as comfortable as possible? Or even help her a little more?

A thank you in advance for anybody that responds, it’s greatly greatly appreciated, this hen and I have bonded something fierce even before this injury, she’s the sweetest thing🥹

Hello and welcome to BYC!

I moved your thread to our Emergency forums for more help. I hope she will be ok! :hugsHopefully someone stops by soon with advice.

The green is typical chicken bruise color, it might be a good idea to keep her in until it scabs. Don't use too much ointment, you want the area to breathe. Can you get gauze to cover the area?
I was hoping the bruising was still a bruise and not infection, so I’m thrilled to hear this! But I’ve been using thin self adhesive wrap and only doing one layer and when I took it off this morning it was dry so I believe it’s getting the airflow it needs. I’ve tried with just gauze but she just rips it right off (even after taping it) she doesn’t pay any mind to the wrap. But I will definitely dial down on the ointment so she heals quicker! Thank you so much!!
