hi! I have chickens that are older and we just got new chicks in April. They are starting to lay and we came out to a dead one and had what looks like a blowout. I noticed yesterday she was kind of pacing and jumped at the side of the pen a couple of times but she is goofy and gets excited when I get home from work so I didn’t think anything of it. The kids said they were outside with them later yesterday and she was acting fine. I feel bad now. Does this look like what happened? 15 year old found her and wasn’t able to bury her so he had to place her in dumpster as I am out of town. . Help!

I agree that she looks like she may have had a prolapse, and it also looks like an egg is stuck inside. When a prolapse happens, the other chickens will peck at the red tissue, and may damage the vent, and that can lead to serious injury. It is tough that this happened when you could not investigate, or do a necropsy. Sorry for your loss.

Blowout can't believe but let other come and tell I'm very hurt to see in dumpster

I don’t understand what you are trying to say and as I said I wasn’t happy she was in the dumpster either. I am out of town and my son thought that was the right thing to do, he’s 15, give him a break. I will bury her when I return.

I'm sorry this happened, sincerely. These things are not always in our control, things happen. I'm sure it was not fun for your son to find her as he did. Even if you had been there it may not have made a difference in the end for this bird, no way to know. No one should feel guilty or bad about it, honestly. One of the less pleasant parts about having chickens. :hugs
