I agree with all the folks who recommended Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow. I wish everybody would buy a copy of that one before they buy their first chick. (Does it seem like a lot of people these days just don't do books?)
I got a lot out of Andy Lee's Chicken Tractor: The Permaculture Guide to Happy Hens and Healthy Soil as well. Judy Pangman's Chicken Coops: 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock is full of great ideas, too.
My new favorite, though, is Harvey Ussery's The Small-Scale Poultry Flock. It's starting to replace even the Damerow book for me as a primary reference and idea book.
