I herd my chickens with a lunge whip. It gives me a very long reach and keeps the chickens moving in the direction I want. My DH thinks it's the funniest thing he's ever seen.

Actually, I find that a handful or two of sunflower seeds can corral chickens pretty much where ever I want them to go.
