Chapter 4
I stopped, right behind Shelly. She was talking to the small chick. It gasped when I approached, and Shelly turned.
Oh, hi Ryo! Sylvie, its alright. This is my friend, Ryo! The little chick hummed. A lilting, wonderful thing it was. Her voice was soft as silk.
Hello, Ryo. Having a nice day? I would like to play, but I tripped, and fell in hay! Wonderful stuff, but its a bit tough. You know, to eat. I dont like it, and neither does Pete. I was surprised. This chick could rhyme!
Whos Pete? I asked, and her voice rose again.
Oh, Ill put it in your head. Hes a turkey; A Bourbon Red!
Well yessir, I am indeed a turkey, and Im also a Bourbon Red! The names Pete, whats yours pardner? I turned, and was faced with a large creature, at least twice my size, with reddish feathers. He gave me a little smile, and I nearly fainted then and there. Good day! How has it been for you? Im from Texas, the Lone Star State. Hatched there, then raised here by that boy. Actually, just got here. All I know is that Keeper up there came down once, and told me what I told you! He paused, looking over me.
And who are you? What are you? I fluffed myself as large as I could.
I am Ryo. I am a Blue Sumatra Cockerel. I think. I said, not knowing what color I was.
Salright. I know a whole lotta stuff bout chicks. Mmm, yep. Blue Sumatra. Now, what else- Suddenly, a large hand came down, and scooped me, Shelly, Pete, and Sylvie up.
I dont like this ride! Id rather hide! I heard, and The Keeper looked down at us.
How are you all? he clucked.
Im sure youd like to learn something, wouldnt you? he said to all of us. I wiggled and said
YES! I would love to learn something!
Alright, then. Im glad you decided so quickly. Lets go outside and see Rod. Now, I know you all arent a month old yet, but its just for 5 minutes. The Keeper clucked, and soon we were outside. I looked up, and saw a massive blue ceiling with soft-looking white balls of fluff. The Keeper set us down, and Rod ran over.
You left me to him. Why didnt you help me? He sounded hurt. But then he smiled and tackled me. We went rolling, and I was sure I heard a sigh.
Cockerels. said Shelly. Suddenly, I heard a loud screech. Who are you? WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE??? I looked up, and saw a golden hen snarling down at us.
Calm, Briana. Its just new chicks. A large, black-striped rooster walked over to us. I looked up at him, and decided he was looking angrier then he sounded. I whimpered, wondering what would happen.
HAPPYNESS!
