Chicken Breed Focus - Barnevelder

@Chicka_deee Here are 2 photos for color. The first is the ones I put in the incubator last night. The 6 to the left of the line are Barnevelders, they very in color a bit and some have lots of speckles. Those are from 2 of my barnies, the 3rd on lays lighter colored eggs. The dark one to the right are BCM eggs so you can compare how dark they are.

The second is a basket of lots of our eggs so you can compare to other shades and colors.

Pretty eggs! 🌈

I have 3 Barnevelders, and I love them!

· What made you decide to get this breed? - Our neighbors were moving and couldn't take their chickens so they gifted us these girls to add to our flock.
· Do you own them for fun? Breeding? Some other purpose? - Just for fun and eggs, they are about 4 years old and still pretty good layers!
· What are your favorite characteristics about this breed? - They are (mostly) quiet and very docile, and just so beautiful! Rarely go broody and are good layers.
· Post some pics of your birds; male/female, chicks, eggs, etc! - I have 3 hens, Hedwig, Buckbeak, and Samantha. They are lower in the pecking order but can still hold their own if they have to. They prefer to sleep cuddled up in a nest box instead of roosting, which is adorable and something I had never seen in any breed besides my silkies.

I just hatched 4 Silver Laced Barnevelder chicks from shipped eggs (couldn't find any locally). They are beautiful as babies, not just as adults!! They have a very wild look to them, with the stripes - like baby quail or wild boar piglets

Here they are at one day old:

And at one week old, now with wings:

And this is a photo from the breeder's stock, possibly their moms :D I really hope they come out looking like this!

I fell in love with Barnevelders after I saw a picture of them online. I was looking for friendly breeds, and this one came up on one list. They are gorgeous!!! I just HAD to have some! I was about to start my first flock and wanted friendly pet chickens, and being pretty to look at was a nice bonus. Also, they really remind me of Easter eggs from Eastern Europe (that's where I'm originally from) - the kind you draw on with a wax pen, with a lot of detail and high contrast, like this:

So I felt a connection and knew it was meant to be. Now I just hope they're not all roosters

I have a barnevelder, she was one of my first chickens! I got her from a friend who had too many and I didn't know anything chicken breeds at the time, just that I wanted chickens. She's friendly, inquisitive, talkative and laid her first egg in the dead of winter. She lays regularly every other day or so. I love seeing her feathers catch the sunlight, the double lacing is so beautiful. I'm not a breeder and keep chickens for fun. She's my profile picture, but here's one of her in her dust bath and one of her rooting through the compost pile

It’s great to see this thread get active again!

I have always wanted some Barnevelders. I finally got 3 last summer and they are beautiful!

I have a double laced silver named Lottie, a blue laced red named Beatrix and a splash named Gyda.

One of them lasts very pretty speckled eggs. I just can't figure out which one it is yet.

If ya ain’t Dutch, ya ain’t much
(Picked that up when I lived in SW Michigan. I married into a Dutch family. 😂)

I have on barnavelder named Drama. We call her drama because she is such a drama queen. In this picture she is the darker chick, the lighter one is my amaracana.
Here is a update! Drama shoots poop when you pick her up. Anyone else have that issue?
