Chicken Breed Focus - Barnevelder

I have 2 Barnvelder hens and they are absolutely beautiful! Autumn is a little reserved and acts like she doesn't want to be held, but in a few minutes she has decided that a nap on mom's lap might not be a bad thing! The other one, Spice, is one of the alpha hens. I'm thinking of getting a few more along with a rooster as soon as my new coop is finished. The silver are gorgeous! I might "need" a couple of them if I can find a breeder near me. How many chickens is too many???

Just got my 10 chicks two days ago! Here are my 4 Barnevelders. One rooster who is double banded his name is Paka and the three girls I have yet to name. So happy the time has finally came!!!

So cute! How are you able to sex them so young? There doesn't seem to be a sure method for Barnevelders, from what I've read, and what my breeder has told me, so I'm curious.

Haha well I'm not totally 100% sure either 😅 I'm just going off what the hatchery told me. They said he'd be double banded. Lol Paka may or may not eventually turn into Pakarett 😅😅 I'm really hoping so though. And I just need the one lol 🙃

Haha. Take lots of pictures and then let us know if the hatchery guessed right. I photographed mine a lot, at different ages... Going back now and looking at the pictures, there is no distinguishable difference between the males and the females at the fluff stage at all. Only after they started growing combs. Even the feather pattern looked nothing like the adult pattern for quite some time, and the boys and the girls had the same type of (non laced) pattern.

Lol uh oh. I'll be sure to keep documenting with my weekly photos lol. I sure hope they're right. 🙏 I suppose only time will tell 😅
