Oh wow, that's pretty old for birds isn't it?

But then some go older right?

I have had several birds live to around 5 to 10 years, but now I sell them when they are still in their prime because I sell eggs. Also my husband gets on me about keeping non or some that produce few eggs, to sell them or put them in freezer camp. I have a few older girls in my general population coop. They don't lay a lot of eggs but I have a soft spot in my heart for them.

Oh sorry for the confusion, I knew they lived longer but I meant to still be producing eggs. But I know what you mean about keeping older ones I probably will too. It's easier with a smaller flock I think because they'll be pets too so I don't necessarily have to get rid of them but I feel like it could also be harder because of the limited space, like I'd want more that did lay well but wouldn't wanna give up the older ones. But there also really aren't a lot of people living here right now so it should still be plenty of eggs lol

Currently I have around 300 birds mostly females but probably around 60 males right now. I really don't know how many birds I have right now. I sold 22 of the older girls and 14 males, but still have a lot more to go. I'm keeping 6 males: 2 Rose Comb Rhode Island Reds, 2 Single Comb Rhode Island Reds and 2 Rose Comb Rhode Island Whites, a breeder and a spare in case anything happens to one of the breeders and all of the females. The females that won't be in my breeding pens will go into the general population pens.

Oh wow, that's a lot of birds!! I don't know how you'd handle that many! I'm worried even the 9 I'm getting will be a few too many, even though I used to want 15 as the first flock lol eventually I'll probably have way more though because I want a farm but probably not 300 xD how many pens do you have?

It's taken a lot of years. We started off with 6 birds and grew. Good luck and have fun...





We put shade tables in all of the pens. We have planted trees but the trees were quite small.

We added more coops since these pictures were taken.

Oh wow, it looks like you have a great system going!! Looks like lots of maintenance with all those coops though!! And thank you!! Hatch date isn't until October 26th though :'(

Do you want eggs to incubate or live chicks or full grown? I ship eggs but because I'm not npip I don't ship live birds only pick up but depending on where you are I can point you to decent hatcheries

I would probably need some chicks are ones that are ready to go out in the coop and run. Thanks I am completely new with this have never raise chickens so it is a learning experience as I go not sure if I'm ready to do the incubator thing

What region do you live in ? Do you have a heat lamp in your coop? If it's 70 or over where you are and stays around that at night 2 month olds should be fine for you these are things we need to know to help match you with the right age birds what purpous do you have in mind? (Eggs,meat, both or breeding) for a new person I reccommended either rir or buff orpington's rir are independent and can pretty much do without much interaction just feed and water buffs are a bit more friendly but close second to egg laying usually fatter

I live in southwest Virginia no lights in coop and it has been in upper 50's this week. I am hens for eggs.
