Chicken Breed Focus Rhode Island Red

If you haven't been to a show, just go as an observer. Actually that is how I got started showing. I met a lot of wonderful people.

That's a good idea, I never thought of that. I've been to a bunch of fairs and walk through all the animal barns and seen them in the cages but I've never actually been there for the show part, I'll have to go sometime or go to a specific poultry show

Quote: I get mixed up myself. There are so many combinations for so many different crosses depending on the goal of what the breeder wants to produce. I just stick with the simple crosses for BSL and RSL. I do experiment some too just to see what I get.

There definitely are. I used to think it was just one breed or a couple that would make it but it seems like there's a ton of breeds. I'd love to eventually get a Buff Orp roo (only because I keep hearing the RIR roos are mean) and make sex links but I doubt the neighbors would appreciate a roo lol

I don't know what part of the country you live in, most of the northern US shows have been cancelled for this year due to the Avian Influenza. Many of the southern US shows are still on their schedules.

Wait really? I'm in Massachusetts. There's Avian Influenza here right now!? :O now I'm scared to get my chicks this month

I know there's two this year still in Indiana

I think you can get a mean male with almost any breed. I raise pure Heritage RIR's and I never had a mean one, yet. I did have a RSL male that wanted to flog me. I sent him across the yard with my foot and he didn't try again after a couple of boots. He was too mean to eat so I took him to the auction. Did pretty well too.
Grow-out coop and pen.

Some of my Rose Comb RIR's

All boys

one of the flocks on their day out. I rotate the coops and pens.

More youngsters.
