Chicken Breed Focus - Russian Orloff

I've wanted to try Russian Orloffs ever since my research for extremely cold hardy chicken breeds and winter layers led me to find it along with Ameraucanas, Buckeyes and Chanteclers. Russian Orloffs are extremely rare in my area, I've been searching my country for three years and two weeks ago my luck finally shone, and now I've got 4 eggs of the breed under a broody hen along with some Ameraucanas and a lone Chantecler egg. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a fine hatch, and hope to god I have at least one Russian Orloff pullet in the chicks!

I would love to adopt a male for my two females. They're out of this world fantastic! I also have a broody black cochin bantam so hoping the feed store might offer some RO's, eventually. But yah...they're a wonderful breed and do well in the hot too! Only thing I get mad about is that the girls like to hide their eggs during this time of year so I have to go trick-or-treating all over the darn property for the treats! Can't wait to see your pics :love

Had we not been located so far apart, I would have readily passed you any extra male orloff chicks my broody hatched... how I wish I could ship. Alas, I'm far from an expert on the matter so I can't chance it TTxTT are you looking for canadian orloff breeders in your area?

You are very kind! We actually came upon the triplets (2 female; 1 male) in 2018. I have the two hens but lost my roo in 2019. He though, mated with a dominique, and we thus have his mixed off-spring, Mr. Jet the Roo. I can't wait to see your hatchlings...please post as I don't really remember them in view at this young...

At least your beloved orloff roo gave you a wonderful cockerel to remember him by! Will you breed Mr. Jet with your orloff ladies to perpetuate his memory?

I will do my best to get some clear pictures of my orloff chicks. Hopefully mama hen will not hog all the spotlight when I bring out my camera xD

Yes! He's fascinated by them?!?

And once the weather starts to thaw and my b. cochin goes broody again for spring, I can let her sit on the orloff eggs.

Yes, I would love to see pics -- yes please post when you have them!! :jumpy

Be it man or animal, the one thing a male cannot resist is a lady x3

Your broody is a cochin? Nice! Mine is a crossed Sussex, and at only nine months old this is her first time sitting on eggs! I can't wait to see the results of all her efforts <3

Will certainly do so! :thumbsup

That is so true! And I don't ever try to regulate. That's natures' responsibility...

Yes. She is Black Cochin. Her name is Fanny (because she's a pain in the fanny!) and 5 yrs. She first started sitting on eggs at the age of your Sussex too. In fact, in our first several years with her...we'd not see her maybe 7-21 days every 3 months as she's on someone and/or anyone's folks clutch. I mean...we could spy on her...but she didn't want to be seen. I am soo eggscited for you to have orloff...

My god your cochin sounds like she could compete with a Silkie for brooding skills! xD This is the first time I hear of a Cochin brooding once every three months, that must have made alot of hatched chicks for you each year!

My first time ever having Russian Orloffs, I am counting the days on the calendar and super excited too! My peeps are due to hatch on April 4-5-6, so there is yet another week to go before they start hatching... feels like my birthday come early. Gaah I can't wait! xD
