"Baby (Speckled Sussex) chicks vary greatly in color from a creamy buff to dark chestnut and some also have
alternate dark and light stripes lengthwise on the back."
(Karen, ok this is really interesting!!! They have dark chicks with stripes!!
That's what you want to go after. Historically, the darker chicks are
coveted for better ground color( Rich Mahogany Bay)
I think these are large fowl Speckled Sussex.
there is a difference in "darkness's," too, Pick the chicks without a brown helmet on their heads. Those chicks with the helmet are eb(Brown) allele based and that is wrong. One is seeking the darker hued chicks with the chipmunk stripes of the e+ allele( Black Breasted Red ) pattern. In the BBR pattern, there is an "arrow" of darker down which comes up the back of the neck and over the top of the skull. This arrow should be clearly defined. If it is jagged, or broken, that means the chick is carrying additional genes which could be problematic for color patterns.

Webpage says they have show/breeder quality large fowl Speckled Sussex. Upside is they don't carry a bazillion other breeds.

( Karen: I know Peggy Taylor from my Marans days. She is a quality breeder and from what I have seen doesn't mess around with inferior stock. She bred the 1st Black Copper Marans hen that was unbeatable at the shows. Nice lady.)
