More than welcome, Susan. If you hit any brick walls, send me an email
and I will see if I can find a way thru for you. Most times it just takes
another trip down the Grapevine, smile. Leela at Kindred Hill is a good
friend of mine and she has some lovely large fowl Speckleds. I don't
know if she has started her breeding season yet.
Best,
Karen

Is becoming a Sussex fan(atic) like joining a family or a cult?
wink.png
Will I start to form close friendships with other Sussex owners and become unintelligible to most everyone else? It sounds like my kind of project. America needs bantam Sussex chickens of multiple types. It should happen.

I was reading and I think there are more bantam Sussex breeders and breeds in Canada. If said birds are driven across the border rather than shipped via air or cargo boat, the importation forms are less complicated and there is no 30 day quarantine. I live in a state that borders Canada, but it's the one where it wouldn't be the least convenient for me to drive there; I live in Alaska. For Sussex enthusiasts all across the Canada-US border, access to more and more kinds of bantam Sussex is quite possible, I think.

Hi, Susan,
I'm not as informed on Bantam Speckled in Canada as large fowl. Brian over at English River Poultry in Canada ( Ontario?) Bred some of the most stunning large fowl Speckleds I have ever seen. He even got a Best In Show with that one hen. Frankly, I thought she was almost flawless. I don't know if he has them any more. But he would be one to contact about info on Speckleds in Canada. He and the APA Judge Troy LaRoche. Troy judges on both sides of the border and is a very popular judge and a real nice person. He may have seen some or heard about them.
Best,
Karen

Here's a pic of Brians' lovely Speckled hen :

Posted circa 10/2016 . Leela is Pres. of the Sussex Club.

"Brian ( Karen: English River)is out of SS. Sandra Ross is as well. I believe the flocks were dispersed among a few folks. Paul Monteith has some and he sent some to Rod Clow. Both are judges in Canada. If you are in the US your prospects are currently slim in acquiring juveniles or finished birds. It will be a couple of years before I will be offering any. Contact Ernie Haire or Tony Albritton for US. Tony didn't sell any birds this year due to personal reasons, but he may be back on track next year. For contact info on any of these folks that are show breeders, consult the APA yearbook. It's worth the membership fee. "

So now we have 2 names to continue on down the grapevine.

"Baby (Speckled Sussex) chicks vary greatly in color from a creamy buff to dark chestnut and some also have
alternate dark and light stripes lengthwise on the back."
(Karen, ok this is really interesting!!! They have dark chicks with stripes!!
That's what you want to go after. Historically, the darker chicks are
coveted for better ground color( Rich Mahogany Bay)
I think these are large fowl Speckled Sussex.
there is a difference in "darkness's," too, Pick the chicks without a brown helmet on their heads. Those chicks with the helmet are eb(Brown) allele based and that is wrong. One is seeking the darker hued chicks with the chipmunk stripes of the e+ allele( Black Breasted Red ) pattern. In the BBR pattern, there is an "arrow" of darker down which comes up the back of the neck and over the top of the skull. This arrow should be clearly defined. If it is jagged, or broken, that means the chick is carrying additional genes which could be problematic for color patterns.

Webpage says they have show/breeder quality large fowl Speckled Sussex. Upside is they don't carry a bazillion other breeds.

this is a very interesting site. totally organic and proud of it.
Have Speckled Sussex and 10.00 for hatching eggs. Located
in New York USA. They say they don't have chicks in 2017 .
But maybe hatching eggs? Also refs to two friends who do have chicks.
Don't see Speckleds listed for either of the two friends, sigh.
Best,
Karen

Hi, Karen. As other breeders who have outdated listings for these birds, the Texas site no longer lists chickens at all, only goats. However, given that the ebay auction is from "Goats101" in Texas, maybe they still offer SS bantams from time to time.

The California breeder, Beth Swehl, is the woman who does not ship. But . . . she lives in the Mendocino area in California, and lucky coinkydink, so does my friend. And my friend might enjoy taking a drive to obtain some of her birds if she has some available! I will be contacting her again. My friend is in India until later in March, but his town is in the region.

I also saw the ebay auction - I tell you, I do reach out on this issue, and I'm relatively new to chickens, but I'm a relentless researcher of subjects in which I'm interested. I admire your willingness to genuinely learn broad and substantial knowledge about your subject. I registered to bid on the hatching eggs. We'll see . . .

See what energy you bring to things? I've been looking for over a two years, and you come along and within 24 hours I'm eyeballing some hatching eggs. Karen, you are amazing. Thanks for your help, and for being you.

I did it. I bid on the hatching eggs.

One day, 7 hours till the auction closes. The seller states they are from the best breeders in the US (that no one can find anymore, so maybe it's the truth). One can hope. And they are big girls for bantams, which I like! They are bigger than my Buff Brahma bantams on average by 4-6 oz. I think big bantams are just the bomb!

I will keep you posted, Karen!
