Chicken Breed Selector Test

Definitely a Bantam or Standard option. Eggs or Meat or Both. Ornamental or Not. Egg Color. A more detailed personality quiz. All hatcheries should have one for newbies.

Part of the problem is that individual personality can completely contradict breed personality. I have a silkie who is a terrible mother; I have another who attacks nearly any other bird I put her with--and will keep fighting as if she were a [description not permitted by BYC rules].

Another part of the problem is that most subjective descriptions are...subjective. Laying large eggs or laying 365 in a year is not subjective. Calm and flighty are subjective terms. EXACTLY what is meant? I find orpingtoms not to be "calm," but rather to be dull, uninteresting and boring. I also find brahmas calm, but not in the same manner at all.

On the egg color, an option for "not important to me" would be nice. On MPC, you only have the option of choosing which colors you want. It doesn't seem to matter if I check them all, or none at all. I don't want to check only a couple of colors, because at this point, the egg color isn't important to me.

Well, Laree, you DID send me an email, so that helped!

Honestly, this has been in the plans for a while! I love Feathersite, but it would be impossible for them to create a breed selector system because all their information is on static pages. From the beginning of this project (to completely re-create the chicken breed database on BYC from scratch) our goal was to have the information presented in a way that could be searched, sorted, and filtered! The only way this could be done is with having the data in individual fields in a database (think MS Excel).

Well, now that we've got the data together, we're going to work on a system to "search" or select based on the data points collected in the BYC Chicken Breeds Database.

This is on the to-do list, but thanks for the reminder to make it something for us to bump a bit higher on that list!

The if you want a flighty, meat/not meat, good mother quality, ect. is just based on what most of the breed is like. We cant figure how each individual bird will act but based on most of the birds from that breed they will match up. But there always is a chance for a bird to want to be differnt

Also, notice that a lot of hatcheries will say: "_____ breed will lay very nice large brown eggs." Well what if you get a nice large white egg from the bird that was suppose to lay a large brown egg? If someone wanted an idea of what might be the right breed for them having a breed selector would be helpfull.
I dont think the chicken breed selector (if we do make one) will state that _____ breed is so much fun and intertaining. I think it might just have info about the breed.

Cold hardiness and heat tolerance should definitely be on it. Also broodiness.

What I'd like to have is a backwards selector -- put in what characteristics you want in your chickens and it tells you what breeds to combine to get that, LOL! Henk's genetics calculator only covers colors, which are very interesting, of course, but it would be good to have one with practical attributes of the birds, too.
