Chicken Breed You Dislike?

Put me in this camp. These things look alien and creepy to me, sorry.

I know who Bullitt is/was. Steve McQueen, my first real movie crush, and never mind the awesome car. Dad took me, I was eleven. My feet didn't touch the ground for a week!

Now you got it. Steve McQueen is my favorite actor of all time.

I like my bantams individually, not sure I'd want a whole flock of them is all.

Yeah, I thought Welsummers would be a fairly decent choice. Maybe they'll grow some brains at some point? So far at 7 mos and laying it's not looking good. I've got multiple other breeds that were nowhere near this nutty at this age.

I do not like bantams, either. So I do not like feathered heads and feat, bald necks, or bantams.

I thought Welsummer would be a good breed.

Every American should know Roy Rogers. His dog was Bullet, The Wonder Dog. I have to admit I did not remember the dog. I used to watch the old movies on TV as a kid. I also liked Gene Autry.

I'm not super crazy about my Brown Leghorns, but .... we ordered six last spring and five arrived alive. Nine months later, they are all still kickin'. That's 100% survival rate, so maybe that can be attributed to them being half- wild and hysterically flighty. Of the 18 EEs we ordered, only 9 remain. 50%. Okay, three were cockerels. That leaves 15. Two were predatory losses; 13. Hummm. Oh yes, one had a severely prolapsed vent with a broken egg, sigh, we put her down. 12. I don't remember how we lost the other 3. So although the BLs are not as much "fun" as the EEs, (meaning they don't flock in a friendly fashion around my feet, pecking and scratching calmly), they certainly are survivors.

Yeah, Leghorns are generally less a pet and for those who are serious about having a chicken that can forage, survive and lay eggs.

I don't like Rhode Island Reds. One of my first chickens was one and she was a vicious bully. Over the next couple years, I learned on BYC that many many others experienced overly aggressive RIR's as well, enough to assume that aggression is a definite tendency in this breed. I realize that there are those who have nice ones and defend the breed, but I will NEVER get one again. What a relief to now have a flock that all get along!

Liking chickens that have survival skills, can free range in an open pasture, actively forage instead of whinging at the gate, YES!....I like my leghorns and leghorn crosses: they are nervous enough to escape predators. I have given up on Rhode Island Reds because they have sat around, whinging, unable to figure out how to go through the gate...I also tried some production reds this year. They do produce but seem confused by the thought of foraging. What's working best for us is a colorful mixed farm flock. The hens hatch out a dozen or so each year, I change out rooster breeds regularly and, ocassionally, buy a few chicks at the feed store (not TSC).

You are going to have to explain what you wrote. Genetically "bottle-necked" breeds. Does this mean inbred?

Yes, essentially. There isn't enough genetic diversity within the current bloodlines in the US, and the quality of the birds is poor.

For personality -- I can't stand Leghorn and Ancona types. The looks are fine, but such idiots! (If you want a free-ranger that isn't a total idiot, maybe try brabanters. Active and alert but not idjits. )

For looks -- Silkies and naked necks. I've never known a naked neck personally, so I reserve the right to like their characters if I ever get a chance. But looking at them -- yech.

I often don't like feathered legs -- but, oddly enough, some of my favorite breeds also have feathered legs. So I'm inconsistent.

As for araucanas -- I LOVE the bantam true araucanas. I bred them for a little while. I only gave up because breeding good ones is SO HARD. But in terms of appearance and personality, I love love love them. My favorite chicken ever was a little bantam girl who would lie in my lap with her head draped over my arm. Still makes me sad to think of her. I had a rott cross at the time who literally ate through the pen wire -- NOT just chicken wire, either -- to get to the birds, and wiped out the whole flock one day. Sob!

Turkens (Naked Necks); they just look creepy. Why anyone, in my mind, would want a chicken that looks like it's in the middle of a bad molt all the time is beyond me.

OK, if they naturally layed something like 400 eggs a year then maybe.
