Chicken breeds!

During the week I've had my chicks, my Golden Campine has been the most calm, inquisitive, and personable of all. Its shown the other chicks how to leave their packing box, where the water and food are, how to go on their small roosting stick, and comes between chicks that are pecking.

Honestly, it's going to depend entirely on you - what are you looking for, eggs (how many, what color), meat or pet, behavior, how you'll keep them (some breeds make better foragers than others, some are flightier than others)?

I really like my Delaware and Australorps but each chicken is an individual and we have different goals. What do you actually want in a chicken? What is best for you depends on your goals. If it is eggs only, I'd suggest you consider the Leghorns. They are egg laying machines and since they are smaller, they do not eat as much food to produce those eggs. If it is personality and eggs, I'd suggest the sex links. The sex links are usully also egglaying machines and since the coloring or marking is different between males and females at hatch, you can be very sure of just getting pullets. Using the MY Pet Chicken Breed Selection tool is a good way to help get you started, and the Henderson Chart and Feathersite give you a lot of information on the trends of the different breeds and crosses. They are living animals so be aware that the traits given are tendencies not guarantees. Each living animal is an individual.
