Chicken Bully

I'm just curious, do they put up much fuss when you install the peepers? Do they need to be customized/adjusted for each bird? I looked for a video on the installation & couldn't find one. I've heard that I need to wrap up the chicken in a towel for handling when clipping  toe nails or other things? Any info will be a big help. Thanks

Yes they did put up some fuss the first day, shaking it off and trying to scratch it off their heads. They were mad that I had only 3 eggs the following day out of 9 layers. They even forgot to eat, but they got used to it (peepers) after couple of days. No pecking, no bullying, that we're all started by my couple of leghorns and rubbed on 2 wyandottes. Right now the bottom peckers are enjoying life.

I couldn't find any instructions at all how to put it on. I had put it on upside down on couple of them, until I realized looks weird and corrected them.

My pinless peepers came in with a pliers looking thing that spreads them open. I tried practicing couple of times before I use on the chickens. I held each chicken on my left side/lap firmly and use my hand to steady the head so they won't hurt themselves while I install the peepers. There was nothing to it after few sec. It took me less than a min to install it on each chicken.

Mine are supposed to arrive tomorrow. I already have several snap ring pliers & all the different ends, so I don't think it will be too much of a problem. Glad this thread is here and all you're advise has been helpful.

Update! They work awesome. I got them on Sat afternoon, sterilized them & installed them. While I had them wrapped up in the towel I went ahead & trimmed their toenails, cause I've been getting perforated arms. Talk about being different birds. Nothing short of amazing. They were as easy to put on as the others, on here, have said. They did put up a fuss for a little while & tried to flick them off with their feet or drag their beak on something to get them off, but they stayed on great. I do feel bad for them because it has limited what they can do and has effected their ability to eat some things cause they don't know where to peck. I can tell they're unhappy when the other girls get to peck at a hanging ear of uncooked corn on the cobb, which the others find very delightful. They just go off to the side & lay down. Now they act very peaceful all the time. I would highly recommend these if you have a problem chicken. I think I spent $3.90 for 6, delivered. I got the US made ones off ebay.

I'm pleased to say that while my bully hasn't completely changed her ways her mean streak seems to have tempered somewhat and the attacks have gone from very frequent to the occasional peck. I therefore haven't had to try the pinless peepers, the only downside is that I will miss out on the (hilarious) googly eye idea.

Some birds can just be pure mean, I got 10 layers with 100 sq ft of coop 10' peak and 160 sq ft of enclosed run and added extra 100 sq ft more run just 2 days ago. The bullied ones remained bullied and mean one remain plain nasty that I have to separate them. I live in a nice allotment that I cannot free range them nor put some mad max looking backyard obstacle for them.

It sad to say it's similar to people or worst some are plain mean some are naturally super nice. I got grade school kids that are actually going thru this being bullied cause I taught them to be respectful of others (some kids mistaken it for weakness).

We have 17 hens. Our coop is small. Only about 6x6, with an attached run about 12x14. We are having trouble with one of our hens picking the feathers of others. We aren't sure who's the culprit. Been using pick-no-more on the ones on the receiving end. Seems to be helping.

As for your kids being bullied...That just REALLY ticks me off! Some people just aren't raising their kids right. They don't respect their elders, their peers or themselves! AND to top it all off..some schools don't do a darn thing about it! I think that kids that bully others should not be alowed to go to school with everyone else. They should be sent to an alternative school or maybe the parents can home school them themselves. Take some responsibility for what they have created. I do not believe that kids are born mean or bullies. They are made. Makes you wonder where they learned that kind of behavior...Hmmmmm? My daughter was bullied by a couple of boys when she was in grade school. It didn't end until they moved away. My son was cyber bullied over the summer last year by a group of boys from his school. I had to go to the State Police since it happened out of school. They went to the families of the kids and told them what was going on. I supplied copies of screen shots of what they were saying to him. I hope they showed their parents.

I hope the bullying stops for your kids. My heart goes out to you and your children. No child should have to put up with that.

Thanks for sharing 'bout your chickens, glad to know some people experience them too. Some of my bullies will go to freezer camp when my new chicks starts laying, they're all in a separate coop right now.

As for my kids we decided to put them in private school next school year, since nothing was being done to correct the situation. Sad that 1 or 2 kids (or chicken) can spoil the fun for everyone.
