44.5 x 28 = 1246 (square inches) / 144 (inches in a foot) = 8.65 feet total of coop space.

Considering a cold winter, 2 LF are going to have to be really good friends. Remember feeder and waterer comes out of that 8.65 square feet.

Packing it with a lot of birds will not end up being good for them, feather pecking etc

I would keep looking for a bigger coop or a small shed.

It's already in the teens at night here in the Michigan UP. I counted 78 hens in one of my 8' x 16' insulated mobile hen houses the other night. That is 1.65 ft per bird, and that was their choice. The other hen houses were less populated, but the chickens were huddled together on the roosts. I counted up to 14 good sized hens on a 2" x 4" 7.5' roost.

When the lights come on at 2:00 AM, the hens spend their time on the floor eating/drinking, roosting or laying. They seem perfectly content, and then at 8:00 AM I open the coop door to let them range. At dusk, they roost again and get locked in for the night.

Perhaps it might be easier if I were in southern Michigan, like near the 45th parallel, where it is quite a bit warmer.
