Chicken Coop construction UPDATED

I've went ahead and updated my originial post on this topic and provided a link to my webpage where I'm putting all the photos of the chicken coop at, scroll to the top and you'll see the link.
Thanks.

Progress is never as fast as you would like.

Day 4- I've got about 3/4's of the third wall built yesterday and at the end of the day realized that I made a design error/measurement on the roof line of the chicken coop area.
I'm splitting my roof into two different levels, the storage/nursery room will match our carport roof line but the chicken coop area will be 19" higher than the storage/nursery roof so we have the additional head room in there.
Well when I was facing the carport from the front side, I realized that the chicken coop roof section is not correctly built for the proper slope.

So this morning I will be taking a section down and rebuilding it again.

Went to Lowe's last night and picked up the final amount of 2 x 4's that I was going to need to finish framing all the walls and also picked up the rafter material ( 2 x 6 x 14') for the chicken coop area.

Sue wants me to build a temporary chick cage for the Ring-necked Pheasants this morning also. Going to slap something together so they can have a little more room than the containers we are currently housing them in right now.

I'm hoping to get all the walls done today and most (if not all) the rafters up. If all goes well and I get done early, I'll run to Lowe's and get the plywood and felt to cover the roof.

I'll post up additional photos this evening some time. My target date for having the outside covered is next weekend and I hope I can get at least 90% of the Chicken Coop area done also, I'm running out of time quickly won't be another 2 weeks and we'll might have 24 more keets, so I need to move the RNP's into the coop area soon.

It would sure help to have blue prints to work from.

My head hurts from retrieving all the data from my brain as I go along on this project.

You are right Jeff- your coop layout and mine are very similar. It looks like you have way more building experience than we did though. I can't wait to see it done! I am waiting on tin for the run roof then I can finish the trim on the south wall and paint it. It should look so much nicer painted.

Update day 5 of construction-

I've finished all four sides and installed the rafters on both roofs. Went to Lowe's and picked up the sheathing and tar paper so I can cover the roof today.
I've updated my construction page and added a return link back to BYC: Chicken Coop Project Click Here

All photos are thumbnails so you'll need to click to enlarge them.

I'm not sure on the building experience part of it.

I did change the roof design on mine so it looks a little different now

The wife is going to call around to find Tin roof materials for ours, just don't know if the $$ will allow for us to go that way or stick with shingles.

I may have to take out a second mortgage on this thing!!

We got new galvanized tin for $1.99 foot. The colored stuff was $2.40 Now I can do my garage to match my house. Our friend priced everything for us and told us that colored almost doubled the price but when I called to order what we goofed up, that price difference wasn't very much. Good luck. Hope the price is cheaper where you are, things usually are high around here.

Wow it looks good, and yes the prices are terrible, my DH keeps saying the chickens are costing more then we are. I think once they start to lay we will be glad we spent the money.

Anyway just wanted to say looks good. Is the metal roof cheaper then shingles? We used the 3 tab (like our house) but the price had over doubled, and it hasn't been that long.

Looks great - I really like the split roof that you ended up having to go with. I had thought about using metal roof for my coop as well but found a mom&pop lumber store that dealt in seconds. Got a square of architectural shingles for 35$ so thats the way I went!

Lookin' real nice! Can't wait to see finished product.

Well, from the looks of it, your coop will last a while, so you should be rewarded by your efforts for quite a long time after this work.
