Hi! I just built a chicken coop about 2 weeks ago. I'm thinking about putting a roof on it, nothing too expensive, but just to keep the rain away! ***I already have a roof, but its made out of chicken wire so rain can get in it*** So far, i was thinking maybe even something homemade, but i also want it to look nice. I've thought of tarp, but any other ideas?
I would stay away from tarps. They eventually wear out and fall apart. I use exterior bead board for all my siding and roofing of out buildings. It comes pre-painted to a grey or beige color ($23 for a 4x8 sheet at Home Depot). You could always use cheap utility plywood sheets and paint several coats on the top side but that is alot of trouble and not much of a cost savings. I have also used corrugated metal sheets but this method is way more expensive than wood. Depending on your coop size and how sturdy you want your roof, you can put some 2x4's under the roof for support during Winter snow loads. Below is a picture of a 8x16 shed for hay that I built this past Saturday. Only a few hunderd dollars in building materials and one day to build. The bead board roof makes for a nice watertight roof.
