Chicken coop roof, overhang and construction methods

It never hurts to overbuild! Screws, or whatever is strongest. My coop survived having a 30' spruce fall on it this spring, with a couple of holes through the roof shingles, and no structural damage. Much nicer to build once, and not lose coop and flock in a storm! Mary
I'm one of those people who are guilty of overdoing pretty much everything. Think wrapping Christmas gifts with tons of tape!!

Screws can snap, whereas nails tend to bend back and forth quite a bit before they snap. I think that's why they're used in framing. My husband favors screws (sounds weird), and I favor nails. I asked different people (contractors mostly) and they tend to favor nails, but write when I think I've got it figured out, one will tell me screws all the way!

Not true, but for a 4' span it doesn't matter.

Sounds good! ...how close is that tree?

Resistance to bending increases with the cube of height, but only directly proportionate to the base of a beam. This is why you don’t lay beams flat (and why we have I beams) That is not to say they will fail over a short span, but it is much less rigid.

The shed is under three oaks, so I'll feel better with the 2x4s on edge, even if the span is small. The tree at the back is about 2.5 feet from the shed. There shouldn't be much of any sway down low, so expanding the roofline won't put the roof in contact with the tree in storms.

But hey, that's my family photo and that's me at the back reading a tablet I carved in cavepeople hieroglyphics.

Papa? Is that you???!!!

I use both screws and nails. Keep 'em guessing!

But you do realize that's not a chicken in your avatar? :lau
Well, i was told it was a Siamese! They are very rare chickens. But she has yet to lay eggs though, and once she got some babies from somewhere and was very broody with them! I am really hoping she will start to lay so i can hatch some. They are really cute babies!

Oh, my goodness! Well, if you ever hatch one of those eggs you absolutely must ship one to me in California, okay!
