If you're not comfortable with doind stitches you can always whip out the tube of super glue. It stings, yes, but then you don't have to worry about taking the stitches out later or about doing it in a tender spot.
You can make your own saline solution (just google it) to flush out the wound. If it stinks like rotten meat, as some have said, there is an infection. Pack the wound with bacitracyn or another topical ointment that does not have a painkiller (ingredient ending in -caine) in it.
