Chicken died - how to treat others so they don't get sick

Hi all, we had a tragedy in our flock. One chicken started sneezing and breathing through her mouth. We quarantined her and noticed she had runny white poop, but she was eating and drinking and seemed okay otherwise. This morning we found her dead. None of the other chickens are showing symptoms but we are worried whatever it was will spread to the others. We cleaned the coop and disinfected with vinegar and called a vet but he hasn't gotten back to us. Just wondering what else we can do to keep the others from getting sick. Thanks.

The best thing to do would be to refrigerate (don't freeze) the body and have her necropsied. Then you will have labs to tell you if it was bacterial, viral, or something else. That's the best way to know for sure, and if it's something that could affect the rest of the flock. Many times your state labs will be less expensive than a vet, some states it's very reasonable.

Pulling her away quickly was the right thing to do. Not sure if there is anything else you could have done. I hope that no one else gets it.

One thing I thought of, you could have some tylosan on hand, since that is used to treat respiratory ailments. Can't be sure that is what she died from, or if it is in fact bacterial, but if anyone else seems to be sneezing or coughing you can try giving them the tylosan to see if it helps.
