We were gone for the day but in the morning had no indication that our oldest chicken was in any distress. When we came back, we found her dead beside her first egg. She had what looked like an extreme prolapse including her intestines out. There was not a lot of blood showing at all though. Can anyone tell us why this might have happened? Is there anything we could have done? My son is extremely upset. This was his very first egg hatched baby, and he loved her greatly. He is very worried that it will happen to the other girls. We have 1 more that is close to laying and she was best friends with the one that died.

Well, welcome to BYC.....sorry to hear about the pullet dying of prolapse. From what I've heard, it's rare, and I am guessing the others will be fine...
Good luck!

Sorry for your loss....
There really is not way to predict this or prevent it.
A good complete balanced diet is the best thing when trying to give a chicken a good start in life.
