We have 4 aussie mixes. They have a coop with plenty of ventilation and deep bedding. They get fresh water daily, oats and Layena. One bird died last week, but she had very bloody eggs for a couple of days. The wonderful people of BYC told me it was probably a problem in her laying track. But my girl today, not quite a year old, died with no symtoms, no problems, no wounds.. nothing. I just found her dead in her coop.

Any ideas?

I'm sorry for your loss.

Was she overweight? I don't know much, but I just read today about heart attack in chickens. It could happen to an overweight hen with no previous symptoms - just suddenly falling over dead. The book I was reading said that a veterinarian can often determine cause of death and make recommendations for well-being of the rest of the flock.

I'll be interested in what some of the wiser folk of BYC have to say. Best of luck and health to your remaining chickens.

She's not overweight. I'm just really puzzled
