After raising my chickens for the last 2 1/2 years since they were a day old, I walked out to them this morning and found one of them dead. They are in an enclosed run from top to bottom. No predators can get in. We are in the city. She appeared healthy yesterday afternoon, she laid an egg. The only unusual thing I saw was a small blood drop and smudge on the hanging feeder. Her body was about 2 feet away. We didn't see any signs trauma on her body.

Hello :frow and Welcome to BYC! So sorry about the loss of your hen. Do you think she got hung up on the feeder?

So sorry for your loss - some times they just die suddenly. It doesn't sound as if you are dealing with an infectious situation.

Thanks. We've been trying to think all day what might have happened to her. We checked to see if there were any nails sticking out or something that may have hurt her, but there wasn't anything. Besides, she had no blood or cuts visible on her. I understand it's common for chickens to have heart attacks and a disease called ascites. I'm just wondering if any of those things could have been the cause.

Sorry for your loss, chickens sometimes die for no reason that can be detected.
