In the Brooder
Hi all,
I’m new here, but I got 2 new chickens a few weeks ago from a local feed store. They’re fully-feathered and I have no history on them... I know I sound stupid, but I didn’t quarantine them and one of them ended up sneezing... which turned into all my chickens getting sick. I have 8 chickens with the 2 new ones included. I’m on a Facebook chicken group and asked for advice. I was told to try using Denegard. Someone was kind enough to lend me a little, but it wasn’t enough to dose the water for multiple days in a row. All were still sneezing, wheezing, and shaking their heads. My black Jersey Giant ended up looking the sickest - Very lethargic, depressed, just wanting to sleep, horrible sneezing, wheezing, and coughing. I immediately went and bought Tylan, based off another piece of advice. They only had Tylan 200 so that’s what I bought. I started dosing all the chickens orally twice in the first day, then added it to the water after the first day. Everyone looked much better after a few days, including Crybaby, my BJG.
Now, Peckerhead is my smallest chicken with the biggest personality. She’s very active, vocal, and loves exploring. I noticed on Friday she wasn’t as active that morning. Upon closer inspection, her eyes were extremely swollen and she was having difficulty breathing. I gave her an injection of Tylan 200 0.2cc IM after asking for advice again. Still worried, I then brought her to my vet who told me to dose 0.07cc IM TID for the next 3 days and 0.2cc was way too much for her 360g body. She looked better by yesterday, but after her injection this morning at 6AM, she is looking tired and depressed, and isn’t wanting to put much weight on her leg on the side I gave the injection. I’ve been switching sides each time, but always giving in the breast muscle (pull back on syringe, given with insulin syringe and needle inserted only about halfway into muscle. Needle on insulin syringe is shorter than average needles). Is this typical behavior?? Is she just sore or could I have done something wrong? Anyone have experience with this?
