Hi there everyone

I happen to have a polish hen who keeps eating her eggs after she's lays them, does anyone have a way I could possibly stop her from doing this?

Thanks

Is she getting enough protein (at least 16 %) and enough oyster shell and other calcium (at least 4%)?
Switch out eggs with golf balls if you can do it quick enough.

If you can, blow out an egg and fill it back up with dish soap. When she breaks in she'll get a disgusting mouthful. Do it enough times and she should start to think that eggs are gross inside and she may stop.

Thank you so much for all your great advice she is getting enough protein and calcium so I will try using the soap and golf balls.

Hi Omle!!!!!! I heard that you can also fill the eggs with spicy mustard if you want to try something that won't harm her.

Actually the mustard doesn't work :) Chickens and birds in general don't taste spicy and hot things like we do so the spiciness won't put her off. Chickens only have 24 taste buds so they can't detect all the subtle tastes we can.

Hmm, one of my books suggested it, I didn't think about how chickens can't taste spicy things. Thanks:)

You're welcome! Yep, it's why they'll put away hot peppers without blinking. They just don't sense capsaicin like we do. They have the receptors, they just don't react the same way.
